How long does weed killer take to dry?

Almost no UK weedkiller label puts a number of hours on it, and that is deliberate rather than an oversight. They set a condition instead: keep children and pets off the treated area until the spray has dried, and then they can go straight back on it. The one label figure I have found anywhere is in minutes. The Resolva Path and Drive fact sheet (MAPP 19199) tells you to keep people and animals off dense patches until the spray has dried, often just 15 to 20 minutes. Everything else on the shelf leaves it to your eyes, and the company that markets Roundup and Weedol in Britain says plainly why: definitive times cannot be given, because the weather and the temperature decide them.

Why nobody will give you a straight number

Read around this question and you will be handed a different answer every time: fifteen minutes on one website, two hours on the next, twenty-four hours on the one after that, forty-eight if the page is about dogs. Not one of them says where the figure came from. That spread is not a sign that the topic is complicated. It is a sign that people are guessing, and then quoting each other's guesses.

Evergreen Garden Care, who market Roundup and Weedol in the UK, will not play that game, and their exact wording matters. Definitive times cannot be given with regards to drying times, because these will be affected by the weather and the temperature. Their instruction to the customer is to use their best judgement, and their position on re-entry is the plain one: children and pets need not be excluded from treated areas once dry. So the manufacturer of two of the biggest brands in the country is telling you there is no number, while a dozen websites confidently supply one.

The Resolva figure is the exception rather than a contradiction, and reading the small print shows why. Their Path and Drive fact sheet says people and animals can come back off dense patches once the spray has dried, often just 15 to 20 minutes. Note the word often, note that it applies to dense patches rather than the whole job, and note that the product is a 60 g/L acetic acid contact spray, which is a different animal from a systemic glyphosate. It is a genuine label figure, and it is a floor for one product, not a rule for the aisle.

The natural bottle does not buy you a shorter wait

Now to the question most people are really asking when they type this, which is how long the stuff takes to dry before the dog can go back out. I went through the current UK product pages across three completely different chemistries and the re-entry sentence is word for word identical on all of them: keep children and pets away from treated areas until spray has dried. Same wording on a 7.2 g/L glyphosate ready-to-use. Same wording on a 60 g/L acetic acid spray. Same wording on a 43.1 g/L pelargonic acid one. Westland uses the same sentence on their pelargonic product too.

So the premium you pay for the bottle marked natural does not buy you a shorter keep-off period, and the glyphosate does not cost you a longer one. The trigger is the same physical event in every case, which is the water carrier evaporating off the surface. Until it goes, there is something wet there to transfer onto a paw, a knee or a football. Once it has gone, there is not. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why the labels describe a state rather than a duration.

Weedol Pathclear (MAPP 16524) uses the same sentence again, and so does Roundup Pump 'n Go Fast Action (MAPP 14481), which prints it in capitals: keep children and pets out of treated areas until dry. Half the reason for waiting is not about your health at all

Look at the Weedol Pathclear label properly and the until-dried rule appears twice, in two different sections, doing two different jobs. Under Caution it reads: to avoid transfer to lawns and other desired vegetation, do not walk into treated areas until the product has dried. Under Safety Instructions, further down, it reads: keep children and pets away from treated areas until spray has dried. The Roundup Ultra label (MAPP 18850) folds them into one restriction and shows the join, telling you not to walk or allow children and pets into treated areas until the product has dried on leaves, to avoid transfer to lawns and other desired vegetation.

So half the reason for waiting has nothing to do with anyone's health. It is that a wet treated surface comes off on the soles of your boots, and the next place those boots go is usually the lawn. That is one of the commonest ways a stripe of dead grass appears along the edge of a drive nobody sprayed. The professional label makes that split completely explicit and it is the last thing you would expect. Roundup ProActive (MAPP 21225) is 360 g/L glyphosate, fifty times the strength of the ready-to-use trigger bottle, and it carries a section headed Exclusion Times. What that section says is this: people, pets and wildlife need not be kept out of treated areas. It is best not to walk in areas where the spray is still wet as transfer to other vegetation may lead to unwanted damage to other foliage. Once the spray is dry this cannot occur. Read it again. The strongest glyphosate on the market sets no exclusion time for people at all, and the only reason it gives for staying off a wet area is that you will carry it onto the plants you wanted to keep.

Dry, rainfast and dead are three separate clocks

Most of the confusion in this topic comes from running these three together, so keep them apart. Dry is a surface condition and the shortest of the three: the water has evaporated and there is nothing left to transfer. Rainfast is a chemical condition and much longer: enough of the dose has moved inside the plant that a shower will not strip it. Dead is the longest by a distance, at roughly two to four weeks with a systemic.

The gap between the first two is the expensive one. Spray application science puts it carefully rather than absolutely: drying time can significantly influence rainfastness, especially where getting into the plant matters, and residue loss by wash-off is greatest when rain falls within twenty-four hours of spraying. On the ground that means a drive can look and feel bone dry an hour after you finish and still have the job ruined by a shower at hour three. What actually decides how long it takes

Farm sprayer operators do not guess at this, they measure it, and the measure is worth borrowing because it explains everything a garden label leaves vague. It is called Delta T, and it is the dry bulb temperature minus the wet bulb temperature, which is a better guide to how fast water evaporates than humidity on its own. Tom Wolf, who writes on spray application at Sprayers101, describes a range of two to eight as ideal. That single number rolls up temperature, humidity and how much moisture the air can still take, which is why a warm still muggy afternoon and a cool breezy morning can dry at completely different speeds despite the thermometer saying otherwise.

That measure also turns the question on its head, because fast drying is not automatically a good thing. When Delta T runs too high, water evaporates rapidly, the droplets shrink on the way down and become more prone to drift, and the deposit that lands dries quickly, which reduces uptake, because uptake works better from a wet deposit. Too low and the droplets sit there in liquid form, drift-prone in a different way. So a scorching, bone-dry afternoon that dries your drive in ten minutes is not the ideal spraying day people assume it is. It is a day where a good part of the dose flashed off before the plant had a chance to drink it.

The one thing genuinely in your control is how heavily you lay it on. A surface you have drenched to the point of running will still be wet long after an even, fine covering has gone off, and over-application is the usual reason someone is standing on their drive an hour later wondering why it has not dried. Wetting the weed thoroughly is the instruction on every label. Soaking the paving is not.

On a drive it behaves differently, and there is a warning worth quoting

I looked for a published comparison of how a spray dries on block paving against how it dries on a leaf and could not find one, so I am not going to hand you a figure for it. What I can tell you is what changes physically. A leaf is waxy and it takes some of the dose inside as the film thins, so drying and absorption happen together. Concrete, tarmac and block paving take none of it in, so the deposit simply sits on the surface until the water goes. A dip in a block-paved drive holds a shallow puddle that will still be wet when the rest of the run has dried off, and that puddle is exactly where a dog will put its feet.

There is also a warning on the Resolva Path and Drive fact sheet that matters far more on a drive than on a border, and it rarely gets quoted: use may cause some surfaces to become slippery for a short time after application. A wet-looking patio is a slip hazard as well as a transfer risk, and if you have got elderly parents or small children coming in and out, that is the reason to route them round it rather than any toxicology argument.

Which leaves you with a short list of habits. Look at the surface rather than the clock, in daylight, from a low angle where the wet sheen shows up. Do it on the shadiest bit of the job, because that is the last part to go. If you must check by touch, do it with a glove on. And if you want the treatment to work rather than just to dry, aim for a mild, settled day with a bit of movement in the air, and give yourself six clear hours before the next shower.
