Driveway weed spraying in Leicester, from £15

Weeds coming up through every joint in your block paving, or along the edges of the tarmac? I’m The Weed Guy. I spray driveways across Leicester and kill the weeds down to the root, so the drive clears properly instead of greening over again by next month. Send a photo and your postcode and I’ll text you a fixed price within 24 hours.

Why your driveway keeps greening over

A block-paved drive is really hundreds of little seedbeds. The sand in the joints holds damp and grit, the wind drops seed into it, and within a season you’ve got grass and moss threading up the whole drive. Tarmac and concrete are no safer: weeds take hold in the shrinkage cracks, the expansion joints, and the soft edges where the drive meets a border or wall.

A drive is big, flat and open, so it shows more than anywhere else on the property, and it’s the first thing anyone sees when they pull up. Pulling the weeds or jet-washing the blocks clears the green for a fortnight, then the roots left in the joints push straight back up. I spray the whole surface instead, so it dies off from the root.

  • Block-paved drives, weeds in every sand joint.
  • Tarmac and resin drives, cracks, seams and edges.
  • Concrete and paviour drives, joints and slab gaps.
  • Gravel-over-membrane drives, weeds through the sheet.

What I’m usually called out to on a Leicester drive

Most drives I quote for have the same mix: meadow grass and moss furring up the joints, dandelions and plantains dug in near the edges, and the odd bramble or bit of bindweed creeping in off a neighbouring border or fence line. On older block paving the jointing sand has usually washed out over the years, so it sits low and the roots have got right down into the sub-base. That is the stuff that laughs at a stiff brush.

The drive changes with the part of Leicester you’re in. The Victorian terraces around Clarendon Park, Knighton and Highfields tend to have small block-paved or tiled forecourts where the weeds sit tight in the old joints, while the newer estates out at Hamilton, Thurmaston and Beaumont Leys have big open block-paved drives that green over fast once the jointing sand thins. Shaded, north-facing drives and the shared alleys behind the older streets go over quickest of all. Whichever yours is, I treat the lot in one go rather than dabbing at the patches that show, so you’re not back to square one in a month.

Why jet-washing and pulling never last

Every quick fix works on the top and leaves the root. Jet-washing blasts the green off and looks great for a fortnight, but it strips the jointing sand, opens the joints up and drives seed deeper in, so it often grows back thicker. Pulling and scraping snap the tops off and leave the root sitting in the joint, ready to push up fresh in a few weeks.

Salt and vinegar burn the leaf but never reach the root, and they can sour the ground and mark some blocks. A weed membrane only helps under new gravel or paving, it does nothing for a drive that is already down and already weedy. Spraying is the one thing that gets to the root, which is why it is the one that lasts.

Why it stays gone

The weedkiller I use is professional-grade and I’m qualified to use it. It goes in through the leaves and travels down into the roots sitting in your joints and sub-base, which is the part that matters on a drive. Scorch the tops or scrape the blocks and the root just sends up fresh growth a fortnight later. Kill the root and that weed is done.

Give it the full four weeks: it takes a couple of weeks to bite and up to four to finish. Once it reaches the soil it stops working, so it will not linger in the ground or creep into a border you want to keep. If rain is due within a few hours of me spraying, I reschedule rather than waste the treatment and your money.

Driveway weed spraying, common questions

No. It works on the plant, not the paving. It won’t bleach, stain or eat into block paving, concrete or tarmac. It goes after the leaf and the root, not the surface underneath.

Yes. It takes out everything green and growing on the drive: grass, moss, dandelions and the tough perennials rooted down in the joints, not just the obvious weeds.

Yes. As soon as it’s dried in you can park and use the drive as normal, which is usually within a few hours. I’ll tell you on the day how long to leave it.

Read the full answer

No, leave them be. I want the weeds standing and in leaf so the spray has something to land on and carry down to the root. A freshly cleared or jet-washed drive is harder to treat, not easier.

Yes. Weeds on a gravelled drive root in the muck that collects on top of the sheet, and often push through it, so I spray the surface and knock them back the same as any other drive.

Dead in four weeks, or I re-spray free

If the weeds on the drive I’ve treated aren’t dead within four weeks, tell me and I’ll come back and spray that area again at no charge. That covers my work going wrong. It doesn’t cover brand-new weeds seeding somewhere I never treated, and it’s a re-spray rather than a refund, but on the ground I’ve sprayed, if it’s not dead, I put it right.
