How to get rid of stinging nettles

This is about killing the plant, not treating a sting. Nettles beat people because the bit you can see is the small half of it: there's a shallow mat of yellow rhizome running sideways underneath, and cutting the tops off is exactly what it's built to survive. Here's what actually clears a stand, the one date the whole job hangs on, and what to do when the nettles are rooted on the other side of your fence.

The short version

Cut the stand down in early summer, before the end of June, so it can’t seed on you. Let it push fresh soft regrowth. Spray that regrowth with a systemic glyphosate in September, while the plant is drawing its reserves down into the root. Then look at the same ground next spring and treat whatever appears. Don’t dig an established patch over first, because you’ll cut the rhizome into pieces and each one grows again.

What's actually under a nettle patch

Two structures, doing two different jobs, and most advice only mentions one of them. There are rhizomes, which are underground stems running sideways through the soil, and there are stolons, which are stems that run along the surface and put roots down wherever a node touches ground. The RHS lists all three routes plainly: seed, rhizomes and stolons. A plant with three ways of spreading isn’t going to be finished by one afternoon with a strimmer.

Here’s the part worth knowing before you put a fork in. Most of that root system sits in the top 20cm of soil. It’s a shallow mat, not a tap root, which is genuinely good news: you can physically get under a young nettle with a border fork, which you can’t do with horsetail and its metres of root. Depth was never the reason nettles beat people.

You’ll know it when you turn it up. The Botanical Society’s species account describes the older rhizomes and established roots as carrying an extremely distinctive bright yellow, furrowed corky layer, going woody and mechanically tough with age, while the surface stolons the plant throws out are cream, pink or red. So bright yellow means you’re into the old established core of the stand. Pale creeping stems mean it’s pushing into new ground.

The sideways numbers are the ones that explain why a patch you cleared two years ago is now twice the size. The same account puts annual rhizome spread at 35 to 45cm, branching as it goes, and reckons a single overwintering plant can finish up 2.5 metres across from where it started, by vegetative spread alone. That’s one plant, no seed involved. You’ll see 1.5 metres a season quoted all over the place, in both metric and feet, with nothing behind it. Take the sourced figure.

Why cutting them back makes it worse, and the bit that's actually true

There are two claims in circulation and both are half right, which is why every guide contradicts the next one. Sorting them out is most of the job.

  • One cut does nothing lasting. The reserves are underground, so the shoots simply come back up. That much everybody agrees on.
  • Repeated cutting on a schedule genuinely works. An eight-year trial on an abandoned cattle-herding site high in the Slovakian mountains cut its plots twice a year and took the nettle cover down to nothing, while the plot left unmanaged sat exactly where it started. Garden Organic’s domestic version of the same thing is to cut every time the shoots reach six to twelve inches.

Now the myth. "Strim it and it comes back thicker" is repeated everywhere and I couldn’t find a source for it anywhere. What IS documented is more specific: after cutting or grazing damage, the density of stinging hairs on the regrowth is significantly higher than on the growth that was removed. So the patch isn’t multiplying because you took the tops off. It’s arming itself. I suspect that’s the real observation behind the folk claim, because the second pass through a strimmed patch genuinely does hurt more.

The thing that actually multiplies a nettle stand is a fork or a rotavator. Nettles regenerate from severed pieces of rhizome, which is why the RHS tells you outright to avoid digging or rotavating soil where nettles are established, and it’s the same trap bindweed sets with its snapped-off root fragments. Garden Organic adds the nuance that resolves the apparent contradiction: rhizomes broken by cultivation re-root readily, but the shallow creeping rhizome doesn’t regenerate well after being fragmented over and over, so sustained repeated hoeing exhausts the rootstocks eventually. One dig makes it worse. Digging the same ground every few weeks for years wears it down. Almost nobody is going to do the second thing, which is why the honest advice is to leave the spade alone and treat instead.

Late June is the date the whole job hangs on

Several separate reasons land on the same fortnight, which is unusual, and worth using.

Seed is shed from late June onwards. Cut a stand before then and it hasn’t seeded on you, which matters because some viable seed is still sitting on the dead stems the following January. Leave a stand standing and it keeps re-sowing the ground all winter.

That same window is what the selective grassland products want. Grazon Pro’s nettle row says to spray when the plant is actively growing but preferably before flowering, normally up to mid-June. The amateur glyphosate label says much the same in gardener’s language, and then tells you exactly what to do next: cut fully grown nettles back in early summer and treat the regrowth in September.

That two-step is the method, and the reason it works is worth understanding rather than just following. A metre of tall woody nettle is a poor target, because most of what you spray runs off old stem. Cut it and the plant spends its own reserves pushing up soft new leaf, which is a far better surface for a systemic to be absorbed through. Come September it’s moving sugars down into the rhizome for winter, and a systemic weedkiller goes down with them. You’re using the plant’s own plumbing against it, twice.

The window to avoid is deep winter, for the same reason. Nothing is moving, so nothing gets carried to the root. The seasonal timing question works the same way across most perennial weeds.

What weedkiller labels actually say about nettles

Not brand copy. These are lines off the approved product labels, which is where the useful detail tends to hide.

The middle row is the one nobody quotes, and it settles an argument. Professional glyphosate labels band weeds by the dose needed to kill them, and common nettle sits in the same band as bracken, creeping thistle and spear thistle, a band above broad-leaved dock, curled dock and common couch. So when you read that nettles are easy to kill with glyphosate, the label disagrees. That same document carries a standalone caution in five words: reaction of nettle is slow.

Which means the complaint you’re about to have has already been anticipated. On broad-leaved weeds, leaf symptoms usually take 14 to 21 days to show, with full desiccation around 30 to 40 days. The amateur bottle puts it as effects within one to four weeks. Nothing visible after five days is normal, not a failure, and on nettles specifically the label expects it to be slower than average. Anything that wilts the same afternoon is burning the leaf, not reaching the rhizome.

There’s one genuinely different tool worth knowing about: a triclopyr product like SBK Brushwood Killer, which names nettles on the label and is formulated to kill difficult weeds without taking the grass with them. That’s the call when nettles are coming through a lawn edge or a verge you want to keep, and the mechanism behind it is worked through on the brambles pillar. For open ground, gravel or a fence line where nothing green needs sparing, a straight glyphosate concentrate does the job for less money. Concentrate strengths and the mixing arithmetic are set out separately, because getting the dilution wrong is the most common way people waste a bottle.

Which weedkiller for nettles: glyphosate or triclopyr?

Nettles are one of the few weeds where both answers are right. The choice is settled by what is standing next to them, not by which bottle is stronger.

Both reach the rhizome, which is the only test that matters on this plant. Glyphosate is systemic and indiscriminate: it gets carried down into the root, and it kills the grass, the border edge and whatever else it lands on along the way. Triclopyr is systemic and selective: it takes broadleaved and woody growth out and leaves grass standing. Neither is stronger than the other on a nettle. They differ in what is still alive afterwards, and that is the entire decision.

For open ground, a gravel strip, a fence line or the corner behind the shed that nobody has touched in five years, glyphosate is the cheaper call, and a concentrate you dilute yourself is cheaper again than trigger bottles over a job this size. Carry the two things from the label table above with you when you buy: the professional label puts common nettle a dose band above docks and couch, and it warns in five words that reaction of nettle is slow. Buy for a programme, not for a weekend.

Where there is grass you want to keep, SBK Brushwood Killer is the one to know about. It is a home-garden approved concentrate carrying 48 grams of triclopyr per litre (MAPP 12711), and nettles are named on the pack rather than being an off-label guess, in the same rate group as brambles and tough weeds: 30ml in 6 litres of water through a watering can with a fine rose, or 30ml in 1.5 litres through a sprayer, spread evenly over 10 square metres, any time from May to October. The label sets its own ceiling as well, and it is worth reading before you plan the season: a repeat may be applied after six weeks, to a maximum of two treatments a season. A 500ml bottle is stated to treat up to 166 square metres, which is simply that rate done as arithmetic rather than a marketing number.

Two honest limits on it. Its grass claim is not what it looks like, and the SBK resource sets that out properly rather than me repeating it here; read it as rough grass, verges and neglected ground rather than a lawn treatment. And its labelled place is grassland and other neglected non-crop areas, which a paving joint or a block-paved drive is not, so the grass selectivity buys you nothing there and glyphosate is the right call. Whichever you buy, the timing above still decides the outcome: cut the stand before the end of June, then treat what comes back.

What I'd actually buy for a nettle stand

A nettle stand along a boundary is volume work and a root-kill, so what you want is a concentrate you can mix to the label rate by the sprayer-load rather than a trigger bottle sized for a plant pot.

The difference between the two bottles is the authorisation printed on them, not the chemistry inside, and this is the side of that line you are allowed to stand on.

  • No measuring cap in the bottle. Check a cup arrives, or the dose is guesswork.
  • One re-treatment a season, and it takes four weeks. Do not go again early.

Vinegar, boiling water and salt on a nettle patch

One principle answers all three, and once you’ve got it you can predict the answer for any kitchen-cupboard fix anybody suggests. A contact treatment kills the tissue it actually wets and goes no further. A nettle keeps its reserves in a rhizome under the soil. So a contact treatment can’t finish a nettle, at any dose, ever. It isn’t a question of strength.

Vinegar is the one people ask about most. Acetic acid destroys plant cell membranes on contact, and the University of Maryland Extension states flatly that roots are not killed by it. The numbers make it worse: household vinegar is around 5% acetic acid, herbicidal products run 10 to 20%, and at 5 to 10% you get useful control only of weeds with one or two leaves. Perennials show initial damage and then recover. There’s a real hazard in reaching for the strong stuff too, because 11% and above can burn skin and cause severe eye injury including blindness. So the trade-off on offer is a genuinely dangerous liquid that browns your nettles for a fortnight.

Boiling water has one honest use. Hot-water weed control works at the soil surface, and the trial work notes that perennials regrow from their below-ground parts, with weeds back covering the ground within a few weeks. Against a nettle seedling that’s just germinated in a gravel joint, before there’s any rhizome under it, a kettle is a perfectly sensible tool. Against an established stand it’s a hot shower.

Salt is the one to actively avoid rather than just shrug at. Extension advice is against it because it degrades soil structure and stops water moving through the ground, and it doesn’t break down, it accumulates and travels sideways with the water. It’s the same chemistry you spread on an icy path in January, which is worth a thought before you pour it along a wall base or across paving. Why they're growing exactly there, and why they come back

Nettles aren’t random. They’re an indicator, and knowing what of tells you whether this is a one-off job or a permanent fight.

Everybody says nettles mean nitrogen. The sourced answer is more specific and more interesting: nettle demands nitrogen and is at least as greedy for phosphate, and it’s the phosphate demand that actually separates it from plants which cope with poor ground. The work behind that goes back to Pigott and Taylor in 1964, and the Botanical Society’s account of the species adds the mechanism that explains the exceptions: below pH 5.5, phosphate becomes almost insoluble as it locks up with iron and aluminium, so an acid soil can be enriched and still not grow nettles.

Which is why they turn up where they do. That same account describes nettles growing luxuriantly around farms and houses, particularly beside gateways where animals stood waiting to be brought in, and anywhere manure or waste has been heaped. Enrichment, plus a bit of disturbance, left alone by a mower. If you’ve got a nettle stand in one specific corner, there’s a decent chance something was tipped, heaped or kept there, possibly long before you moved in: an old compost corner, where the bins stood, a bonfire spot, a stack of muck. I wouldn’t read a nettle patch as evidence of buried rubble or a leaking drain, though. I went looking, and there’s nothing behind either of those.

Here's the consequence, and it's the part that usually gets skipped. Killing the nettles doesn’t change the ground. In that eight-year trial, the plots that finished up genuinely nettle-free were the ones where the cuttings were carted off, which stripped nutrients out, and the one that got there fastest had competing species reseeded over it. Soil nitrogen ran at about 6,800 mg/kg where the stand was left alone, against about 3,000 where it was cut and cleared. The authors’ own conclusion was that cutting alone, for some years, won’t be enough where the soil holds excess nutrients. Translated for a garden: clear the stand, then put something there. Bare enriched soil is a nettle bed with the nettles temporarily removed. It’s the same reason weeds keep returning to the same square metre of a drive year after year.

Nettles along a fence, at a wall base or through gravel

Every nettle guide I read assumes a garden bed you can put a fork into. That isn’t where most people actually meet them. They meet them in the strip along the fence, at the foot of a wall, coming up through the gravel down the side of the house, on the bit of ground nobody has touched in five years.

That position isn’t bad luck, it’s the recipe. A boundary strip is enriched, sheltered, never cultivated and never mown. It’s such a reliable pattern that it’s used as a diagnostic: Hedgelink treats nutrient enrichment as the single most important reason for poor hedgerow condition, with 38% of hedgerows failing on it, and sets favourable condition at less than 20% combined cover of nettles, cleavers and docks in the two-metre band alongside the hedge. Nettles at a boundary are a measurement of that boundary, not a coincidence.

What changes practically on a hard surface is that forking is off the table and there’s nothing green to protect, which makes it simpler, not harder. A systemic sprayed onto growth coming out of a gravel edge or a paving joint has the whole job to itself. Bear in mind glyphosate is inactivated on contact with soil and leaves no lasting residue, so it does nothing to stop the next seed germinating in the same joint. That part is a jointing and gravel maintenance problem, not a weedkiller problem.

One thing to be straight about, because scare stories about weeds and buildings are everywhere: there’s no evidence that nettles damage a hard surface. I went looking and found nothing at all. For scale, the peer-reviewed work on Japanese knotweed found that even that species can’t grow through intact concrete, that existing cracks are always present where it gets blamed for damage, and that buddleia caused more damage than it did. A nettle exploits a gap. It doesn’t make one.

Then there’s next door. If the stand is rooted on their side you’re not going to kill it, so stop trying and change the goal to containment. You can cut back what crosses onto your land, under a long-standing principle that comes from a case about overhanging branches, without asking first, as long as you don’t step over the line and you accept the cuttings are technically still theirs. You can’t treat their ground, which is trespass. What actually holds a boundary is physical: a defined edge you re-cut every year, or membrane and gravel as a maintenance strip, with the September spray done on your side annually. And none of that paragraph is legal advice.

Is it actually a stinging nettle?

Worth thirty seconds, because several different plants get called nettles and only one of them needs everything on this page.

First, kill off the test you have probably read. "Nettles have round stems, dead-nettles have square stems" is wrong: a common nettle stem is square in cross section too, and the RHS lists white dead-nettle’s stems as square as well. Both are square, so the stem tells you nothing.

The reliable tell is the flower, and you don’t have to touch anything to use it. A stinging nettle’s flowers are insignificant: tiny and green, hanging in drooping tassels from the leaf joints. A dead-nettle’s are the opposite, conspicuous hooded two-lipped flowers in whorls, white on white dead-nettle and pink-purple on the red one, because they’re mint family rather than nettle family. If you can see obvious flowers, it isn’t a stinging nettle.

And the reason it matters is that the treatment changes completely:

  • Red or purple dead-nettle is an annual. Pull or hoe it and that plant is finished. The whole job is stopping it seeding, because it produces a startling amount of seed for its size.
  • White dead-nettle is a perennial that spreads by rhizomatous stolons, so it does come back from what you leave behind. It’s a fraction of the size though, spreading to about half a metre rather than 2.5.
  • Small nettle is a true nettle and it does sting, but it’s an annual, usually under 60cm, with leaves around half the size. No rhizome programme needed, just don’t let it seed.
  • Common nettle is the one on trial here: up to two metres on good ground, stinging hairs on the stems and leaf undersides, green tassel flowers, and that yellow rhizome mat underneath.

So "if it’s a dead-nettle you can just pull it" is only true of one of them, which is the sort of detail that gets flattened out of a two-sentence mention.

Should you actually get rid of all of them?

Probably not all of them, and this is the one part of a nettle job worth thinking about rather than just executing. The RHS counts over 100 species of invertebrate feeding on common nettle, including the small tortoiseshell, red admiral, comma, painted lady and peacock butterflies. That’s a real cost to clearing every last one, which is not something I’d say about most weeds on this site.

But I’m not going to hand you the usual guilt-trip about leaving a wildlife corner, because the RHS is honest enough to say what actually helps and it’s more demanding than people pretend. A clump has to be large and it has to be in a sunny position, which the RHS admits is impractical in many gardens, and small clumps are unlikely to attract an egg-laying female at all. So the shaded strip of old nettles behind your shed is doing nothing for butterflies. If you want to keep a patch, keep a big sunny one on purpose. If you haven’t got room for that, clear the lot and plant something that feeds insects instead, and don’t feel bad about it.

If you are keeping some, the timing lines up with everything else on this page anyway. The RHS advice is to cut it down in mid-summer, once the first small tortoiseshell brood has developed, which stops it seeding and gives the next generation the young regrowth they prefer. What kills nettles permanently?

Nothing in a single go, and any page promising otherwise is selling you something. The combination that genuinely finishes a stand is: cut it down in early summer before it seeds, let it push soft regrowth, spray that regrowth with a systemic glyphosate in September, then look at the same ground the following spring and treat whatever comes up. Budget two seasons, not one afternoon. And if you want it to stay gone, something else has to end up occupying that ground, because soil that grew nettles will happily grow them again.

Do nettles come back if you cut them?

Yes, from the rhizome, which is where the plant keeps its reserves. One cut achieves nothing lasting. Cutting on a schedule is a different thing entirely: an eight-year trial on an abandoned grazing site found that cutting twice a year took the nettle cover down to nothing, while the plot left alone didn't decline at all. The catch is that it took years, and it worked partly because the cut material was carted off, which took nutrients out of the ground with it.

Will strimming nettles make them spread?

The popular version of this, that a strimmed patch comes back thicker, has no source behind it that I can find. What is documented is more specific and more useful: after cutting or grazing damage, the density of stinging hairs on the regrowth is significantly higher than on the growth that was removed. So the patch isn't multiplying because you took the tops off. It's arming itself. The genuine spreading risk isn't the strimmer at all, it's the fork and the rotavator, because a chopped-up rhizome re-roots.

How deep are nettle roots?

Shallow, by weed standards. The RHS puts most of the root system in the top 20cm of soil. That's the most useful number on this page, because it means a border fork can physically get under a nettle while the patch is small, which isn't true of horsetail. The problem with nettles was never depth. It's the sideways spread, and the fact that every broken piece grows again.

When is the best time to get rid of nettles?

Late June is the date to work back from. Seed starts being shed from late June onwards, so a stand cut before then hasn’t seeded on you. It’s also the point the selective grassland products want you spraying by, and what an amateur glyphosate label means by "early summer" when it tells you to cut back before treating the September regrowth. Deep winter is the one window to avoid: the plant has shut down, so a systemic weedkiller has nothing to travel with.

Does vinegar kill stinging nettles?

It burns the leaves and does nothing else. Acetic acid destroys the tissue it actually wets and has no ability to move into a root, and the University of Maryland Extension is blunt that roots are not killed by it. Household vinegar is about 5%, herbicidal strength is 10 to 20%, and even at that strength perennials show damage and then recover. Worth knowing before you buy the strong stuff: 11% and above can burn skin and cause severe eye injury including blindness.

Does boiling water kill stinging nettles?

It kills what it touches, which on an established nettle is the part you can already see. Hot-water weed control acts at the soil surface, and trials note that perennials regrow from their underground parts, with weeds back covering bare soil within a few weeks. There's one honest use for it: a nettle seedling that's germinated in a gravel joint or a paving crack, where there's no established rhizome underneath it yet.

Can I put nettle roots in my compost?

No. The RHS is specific about this: keep nettle rhizomes, stolons and seed out of a home compost bin, because a domestic heap doesn't get hot enough to kill them. Do it and you're breeding the thing you just dug up. Young leafy top growth is fine to compost. The roots, and anything that's flowered, go in council green waste.

Can I do anything about nettles coming under the fence from next door?

You can deal with what crosses onto your side. The long-standing principle, which comes from a case about overhanging tree branches rather than weeds, lets a landowner cut back growth encroaching over their boundary without asking first, as long as they don’t step onto the neighbour’s land to do it, and the cuttings technically stay the neighbour’s property. What you can’t do is treat their side, which is trespass. Since the rhizome is on their ground, treat this as containment rather than a kill: a hard edge along the line, re-cut every year, and your own side sprayed each September. Is there any law that makes someone deal with their nettles?

Not one aimed at nettles. They aren’t on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, the list that gives Japanese knotweed its legal weight, and they aren’t among the five injurious weeds named in the Weeds Act 1959, which are spear thistle, creeping thistle, curled dock, broad-leaved dock and ragwort. The high-hedge route can’t apply either, because that legislation only covers a line of trees or shrubs that keep their leaves all year. For genuinely neglected land there’s a general community-protection route through the council, which is a slower path than simply cutting back what’s over the line yourself. Again, not legal advice.

Is a dead-nettle the same problem?

It depends which one, and it's worth getting right because the answer changes what you do. Red or purple dead-nettle is an annual, so pulling or hoeing it genuinely finishes that plant and the only real job is stopping it seeding. White dead-nettle is a perennial that spreads by rhizomatous stolons, so it behaves more like a nettle, though it's a fraction of the size and nowhere near as aggressive. Neither of them stings. And ignore the tip that a square stem means dead-nettle: a stinging nettle stem is square too.

What is the best weedkiller for nettles?

There isn't one answer, and anyone giving you one hasn't asked the question that decides it: what is growing next to them? On open ground, gravel, a fence line or a boundary strip where nothing green needs sparing, a systemic glyphosate concentrate is the cheaper pick, and the whole method on this page, cut in early summer and treat the September regrowth, is written round it. Yes, and nettles are printed on the label rather than being an off-label guess, in the same rate group as brambles and tough weeds. The rate is 30ml in 6 litres of water by watering can with a fine rose, or 30ml in 1.5 litres by sprayer, applied evenly over 10 square metres, any time from May to October. A repeat treatment may be applied after six weeks and no more than two treatments a season are allowed, which is a cap on the approval rather than advice. Do cut nettles still sting?

Yes. A freshly cut nettle stings exactly as much as a standing one, so raking up is as much of a gloves job as the cutting. That's the argument for bagging the material as you go rather than leaving it in heaps to deal with later.
