Round the Georgian High Street and the pedestrianised Square you’ve got flagged and brick-paved frontages, and the Victorian terraces off Bath Street and Fairfield Road have paths and yards where weeds line up along every joint and edge. Why they don’t just grow back
Yanking weeds up, scraping them out or blasting the joints with a pressure washer only takes off the green you can see. The root sits tight in the joint or the sub-base and throws up new growth a few weeks later, and that’s the merry-go-round most people can’t get off. What I use is proper professional weedkiller, and I’m qualified to apply it: it goes in through the leaf and travels down into the root, so the plant dies off whole instead of from the top down.

Keeping it clear through the season
A spray sees off whatever’s growing now, but it can’t stop fresh seed blowing in and settling next season. So if you’d sooner not keep an eye on it yourself, I run an optional plan: I come back three times a year, in spring, mid-summer and early autumn, and keep it in hand. No contract, no direct debit, you pay per visit and you can stop whenever you like. A surface I’m already looking after is a lighter job, so it tends to land in the cheapest band. The one-off spray is still the main thing I do; the plan is just there if you’d rather set it and forget it.

Give the treatment the full four weeks to work through. If the weeds I sprayed haven’t died off by then, say the word and I’ll come back and do that area again for nothing. It’s a re-spray of the ground I covered rather than a refund, and it won’t stretch to new weeds seeding somewhere I never touched, but on what I’ve treated, if it’s not dead, I sort it.
