Melton drives and paths, and where weeds take hold
Melton hard landscaping runs from the old core out to the newer edges, and each surface lets weeds in a different way. Around the Market Place and Sherrard Street the frontages are old, and this is a town that still holds on to patches of traditional paving: the horsewash down off Leicester Street is one of the last cobbled surfaces left in the centre. Weeds seed into every gap between the old setts, kerbs and flags.
Out on the newer estates round Sysonby and the town edge it’s mostly block paving, where seed settles into the sandy joints and roots down into the sub-base. And on the bigger plots out towards the Wreake Valley it’s long gravel and stone drives, which weeds spread across quickest of the lot. Melton might call itself the rural capital of food, but the paving out front still greens over like anywhere else. Why it doesn’t just grow back
Scraping the joints, hoeing them or blasting them with a pressure washer only ever takes the green off the top. The root sits untouched in the joint or the gravel and pushes up again within a few weeks, which is the cycle most people can’t break. The weedkiller I use is professional-grade and I’m qualified to apply it: it goes in through the leaf and travels down into the root, so the whole plant dies off rather than just the part you can see.

Keeping it clear all season
Spraying kills what’s growing now, but it can’t stop next year’s seed blowing back in, and a wet Leicestershire summer gets it going again fast. So if you’d rather not keep thinking about it, there’s an optional plan: I call back three times a year, in spring, mid-summer and early autumn, and keep it down. No contract, no direct debit, you pay per visit and stop whenever you like. A surface I already look after is a quicker job, so it usually falls in the cheapest band. The one-off spray stays the main thing I do; the plan’s just there if you want it.
