Loughborough drives, and where the weeds get in
Loughborough hard landscaping runs the full range, and each surface lets weeds in a different way. The newer estates out at Grange Park and Thorpe Acre are mostly block paving, where seeds drop into the sandy joints and root down into the sub-base. The older terraced streets in the Golden Triangle, between the university and town, have paved and tiled paths that weeds colonise along every edge and gap.
Out towards Nanpantan and Woodhouse Eaves, at the Charnwood Forest edge, it’s gravel and stone drives on the bigger plots. And a fair bit of the paving round here is Mountsorrel granite: the quarry just down the road has been cutting setts, kerbs and chippings for the best part of 250 years, and weeds seed happily in the joints between the setts. Why it stays gone
Pulling weeds, hoeing them or jet-washing the joints only ever clears the top growth. The root stays down in the joint or the sub-base and pushes up fresh within a few weeks, which is the loop most people are stuck in. The weedkiller I use is professional-grade and I’m qualified to apply it: it’s drawn in through the leaf and carried right down into the root, so the whole plant dies rather than just the top.

Keeping it clear through the season
Weedkiller kills what’s growing now, but it doesn’t stop next season’s seed blowing back in, and our wettest month round here is July, right in the growing season. So if you’d rather not think about it, I offer an optional plan: I come back three times a year, spring, mid-summer and early autumn, to keep on top of it. No contract, no direct debit, you pay per visit and cancel any time. A surface I already maintain is a smaller job, so it usually falls in the cheapest band. The one-off spray stays the main thing I do; the plan’s just there if you want it.

Give the spray the full four weeks to do its work. If the weeds I treated haven’t died off by then, tell me and I’ll come back and do that area again at no cost. It’s a re-spray of the ground I covered rather than a refund, and it won’t cover fresh weeds seeding somewhere I never treated, but on what I’ve sprayed, if it’s not dead, I put it right.
